Writing

Our writing curriculum is based upon the National Curriculum which ‘provides an outline of the core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of the pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum’ (2014: 6).

Our curriculum enables all children to benefit from:

  • Transcription i.e. un-laboured handwriting, accurate spelling, accurate and effective application of punctuation.
  • Successful composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in writing).
  • Knowledge of formality and how to control their writing consciously using standard English.

Leaders from All Saints worked with colleagues across Derby Diocesan Academy Trust to help establish a progressive writing curriculum, which clearly sets out the progression in transcription and composition knowledge and skills.

Writing is taught daily, with all children benefitting from the consistent use of dictation to support the development of transcription skills.
