Reading is a vital skill for all children is closely linked to success in all areas of school as well as children's self-esteem, confidence and motivation. Being able to read well is the key to independent learning and so it is given priority by all staff.
Learning to read is a complex process, but in simple terms we need to decode the words (use their phonics knowledge and skills). Children use their phonics knowledge to read with increasing fluency. All children in Early Years and Year 1 take part in daily phonics lessons and group reading three times a week. We continue to teach reading fluency into Year 2.
As children become fluent and accurate, we teach children how to understand (comprehend) what they are reading.
You can find out how reading is taught below:
We want all children to become confident, fluent readers as quickly as possible, and experience a wide range of enjoyable texts. We have carefully developed a list of essential books (which support diversity across a range of genres). You can find this below.
