Maths

Mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving, as outlined in the National Curriculum, form the essential essence of maths teaching at All Saints.

Developing numerical fluency is at the heart of teaching and learning, allowing the children to develop the foundational which they need to use in order to succeed at becoming confident mathematicians.

Children are given daily opportunities to practise and apply their skills so that knowledge and concepts are embedded in the long-term memory and can be recalled and used automatically. Teaching is structured and delivered in a way that builds progressively on previous learning and challenges misconceptions.

Maths teaching

Maths is taught daily throughout both schools, including Early Years, using the ambitious Power Maths scheme to ensure that learning progresses step-by-step as children move through the school and that all children are given the opportunity to master challenging mathematical concepts.

Power Maths encourages the development of mathematical reasoning and maths talk, allowing all children daily opportunities to share their thinking and explore mathematical concepts using practical and visual resources.

We aim to develop children who:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including the varied and regular practice of arithmetic.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, understanding relationships and generalisations, and provide justification or proof using mathematical vocabulary.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing complexity, including breaking down problems into a series of small steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
