We welcome the children in Year 3 into the classrooms from 8:40am onwards so that they are settled and ready for registration at 8:55am.
Our morning activities are usually Maths and Literacy as well as guided reading and spelling. Topic work, along with physical education, is usually taught in the afternoon.
Homework in year 3 is given out on a Friday and handed back in by the following Tuesday. This involves completing a literacy task as well as an online or paper based maths activity. We expect that all children will read with a parent at least five times a week and regularly practice the times tables. By the end of Year 3, children should know their 3, 4 and 8 times tables but, obviously, knowing them all will significantly help their learning and confidence in Mathematics.
During the year, the children will have the opportunity to take part in various performances including Class assemblies, Church services and a Year 3 Nativity play. Sports clubs and inter house competitions are run throughout the year as well as ‘Cluster schools’ events – often organised and hosted by Highfields School.
School trips are arranged to enrich the children’s learning – this year, the children have been to Lea Green to be ‘explorers’; Hartington to explore the rocks and soils of the Derbyshire Dales and will visit Creswell Crags for a Stone Age experience.
At the end of the School day (3:30pm), we lead the children out to their parents and carers where we have an opportunity to discuss any issues from the day.
If you have any questions about the Year 3 curriculum, please don’t hesitate to come and have a chat with Mr Abbott and Mrs Stone.
