As a Church of England school, Religious Education has a high priority in our curriculum. We use a combination of Understanding Christianity and the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus and have drawn up a long term plan for our school. We study Christianity, Islam and Hinduism, and children develop their understanding of faith in Matlock, Derby and beyond. We use lots of practical experiences; the children visit places of worship including Derby Cathedral, the Mosque and the Mandir and meet people of faith from different communities. We work together with The Open Centre and the Diocese of Derby so that children can gain the widest understanding of the diverse society in which we live.
Our teaching encourages children to explore big questions, to understand the impact of faith on the lifestyles of believers and discover how people of faith would express their faith and explain their ideas. We respect the distinctiveness of these traditions as well as looking for common areas of belief. Our syllabus is designed to help children to understand and engage with the central religious tradition of our country as well as promote tolerance and respect for those of all faiths or none.
EYFS - We encourage children to use a variety of technology in school, and to recognise it in places they visit, such as the supermarket. The children play games on the interactive whiteboard, and are taught to use the laptops and iPads. They are able to explore other technology too, such as listening centres, Beebots, remote control toys and other toys that fit in with our topics.
We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.
We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.
Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the programme with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make reading and writing pleasurable and rewarding for our children.
